Tao comedy is about a block and a half from the busy intersection of Western Ave and 3rd St.

It is pretty much a hole-in-the-wall, small space, but very clean with a nice uni-sex bathroom.

The space itself is like a wide corridor in a lobby as if you were walking towards the lifts, though there is none here.

At the entrance is a counter, then rows of simple black chairs: the kind you would expect to see at an auditorium or public school.

Then a very small stage with a red curtain behind it.

The lights are hot and what you’d expect at a comedy club like the Improv.

The Tao stage is small but the same experience for the performer as any other comedy nightclub.

In fact, it’s even more daunting because of the very close proximity of the audience and the blinding and hot glower you get from the lights.

$5 dollars USD for five minutes, and you get a drink.

Could be water or a can of soda or other beverages on offer.

There’s one guy there for staff, and that’s all that’s needed.

No vetting process, except that you sign up with your name on a sheet.

Obey general rules of etiquette, and you will get a warning light at the four minute mark for time.

Some go over the five minutes, but the staff is friendly and flexible.

The audience is a mixed bag of mostly comics testing material.

Do not expect laughs.

The audience is diverse and sophisticated. Many of them have heard your joke before or prefer a different style of comedy.

January 2022 - We went in a Friday Open Mic night. There were a couple of heat lamps but we sat on the side and it was still quite cold, they tried their best though.

For the most part everyone was as social distanced as they could be. The set up is in their outdoor patio area. You have to go 30 minutes earlier before the show to sign up if you want to perform! It's a very intimate setting, about 30 ish people there I'd say.

Great place for comics to try out their jokes! It was a friendly crowd and there was no heckling. The place offers comedian workshops as well!

$5 per person and it comes with canned beer, soda, wine, or water.

This place is awesome, welcoming, and a fun place to get your feet wet with comedy. I’ve been to three Sunday open mics and have felt encouraged every time I’ve been there. The owner Bobbie is a keeper. I only have good things to say about this spot so if you are considering, take the leap.

It was a good place to see starting out comedians, at least that's what they has the night we were bad. It was only $10 so it was worth the money. I'm sure if they had more seasoned comics, you'd pay more.

I've been here many times and it's always a great time. I live close to the stand but prefer coming here for so many reasons. Their comics are much better and the servers are always friendly and attentive. 4 stars!!

A good place to kickstart your comedy career. I was there supporting a friend who was doing his first standup. I liked the place because it just removes the barriers that many starting comedians face. With just $5 and showing up, you get the stage for 5 minutes and it's this is a small price to pay for the experience of practicing your jokes and alleviating stage fright. The downside is that it is very small and as a consequence the audience is small, usually confined to other comedians or friends of comedians.

Loved my experience at Tao! I came here on a Saturday night with my best friend. We both didn't know what to expect. The place is pretty small, but it's a very nice intimate venue. Bobbie was very friendly and greeted us when we walked in. It costs $10 to enter (which included a free drink - nonalcoholic or alcohol). Almost all the comedians were hilarious. Would definitely come back!

I love this joint! No punching down and super inclusive! The workshops are an incredible place to work on material and hone your craft. Mics are fun and great for networking with other dope comics! Bobbie Oliver has certainly created something magical here!

When I meet women who are comedians and new to LA, I immediately recommend Tao Comedy Studio. While so many shows and open mics in town are just cesspools of toxic masculinity, Bobbie Oliver has created a welcoming space for women in comedy, which is rare. There are no men (even in the audience) on Monday night mics, but even during the rest of the week she has a zero tolerance policy for jokes that are misogynist in any way. The storefront theater in Koreatown is small but perfect for comedy, and the back patio is beautiful any time of day.
