Such a different experience and located right in L.A.. Interesting for people of all ages who enjoy science and evolution. Masks are currently required while indoors. You must have proof of vaccination or negative covid test. These things are mentioned on the website so anyone who gives a bad review based on the requirements is being ignorant. Don't skip this place. We also got to see the tar bumbling up in some pits. Very interesting place. It's 15 bucks to park but once you park you can go visit the museum and then visit other museums in the area if you would like. That's what we did.
Definitely an interesting place to visit with you have kids or just want some quiet time in the middle of a urban park. The museum itself is not very large but there are enough pieces (including skeletons and casts) that make it worth visiting. The park surrounding the area is very lively with people enjoying the sunny weather, kids in soccer practice, couples enjoying a picnic, etc. The "pits" themselves are interesting although not particularly remarkable. The replication of a scene where an animal is trapped in a pit is a good illustration about what happened before (even though the current tar pit is a recreation based on oil exploration decades ago). Overall, plan on spending between 90 and 120 minutes there.

The La Brea Tar Pits and Museum is such a cool unique natural history museum. You can walk around the excavation sites and tar pits outside and you can actually see and smell the tar/oil bubbling up from the ground. The museum has a lot of cool fossils and full skeletons of a variety of ice age animals! This is a great visit for little children and adults alike. It takes about 30 to 45 minutes to explore the museum and another 30 minutes to walk around outside. Pro tip - the museum is free for LA county residents every day after 3pm!

My nephew had a ton of fun reading all the information that was available on all the displays. Loved everything that was being exhibited. Had tons of fun exploring outside and finding all the tar coming up from the grounds. Absolutely loved the garden. He learned a lot and loved seeing people working on cleaning up new found bones. It was quite impressive, even for us adults. We will definitely go back again.

I love this place. It's affordable (especially if you go with a friend who lives locally), the exhibits are a fun mix of old school and modern , and it's the only museum I know of where you can watch grad students clean mammoth knuckles. The wall of dire wolf skulls is particularly imposing. And hey, when you're done you can go play with the tar coming out of the lawn outside!

We took two nine year olds. The museum was interesting, more so for the adults. I think the kids would have been more excited if there were dinosaurs! But they enjoyed the activities scattered around, not so much the 3D movie. They did like the bones they could touch. :) Walking around the tar pits in the park was fascinating for my husband and I. We thoroughly enjoyed the day. So did the girls but in a different way... their favorite parts were rolling down the grass hills be the museum entrance and climbing the trees!

This place is great. Really enjoyed the museum. Make sure you also see the 3D video. It's about 25 mins, but full of great info.
The lab, bones, and exhibits were great. Can venture outside and see the active pits too. Pretty amazing. Check it out.

Very interesting ???? the park outside is free. You can walk around the pond/ Tar pit for no cost and the museum is only 15$ per person. We loved it. My son who is only 3 was amazed by all the fossils.

The area is very cool. You get the first wiff of the tar before you even walk into the park. Walk around the park and enjoy the park before you go into the museum, but make sure to spend some time in the museum. They have a working lab that you are able to watch the techs do there work on the different fossils that they have found over the years. They have replicas of many of the animals they have taken out of the pits and even some actual fossils.

A low-key museum with a big impact. I get the feel that the proprietors are all about the research and welcome others to learn about it. It's fine for visitors to roam the grounds and check out exhibits and dig sites for free. You'll have to pay to enter the museum building, and it's worth it. Reasonable prices and full-scale exhibits that put everything in perspective. Enjoy your visit!
