I absolutely LOVED this museum! It definitely made me a little emotional as someone who is super into film. It’s the perfect day activity for any movie lover!

Ok, my two cents is this. It's a beautiful facility. I've anticipated its opening for a number of years. I'd seen the drawings; I heard the presentations. Unfortunately, my vision and their reality didn't meet. I expected more film HISTORY. We had 100yrs to pick from and it's as if they were aware of only the last 40. I expected the Smithsonian of Film. I mean, this is THE ACADEMY after all. Unfortunately, I left feeling like Chris Rock must have after Will's slap. It's a lovely start. There is solid representation for animation (Disney must have written one heck of check). So, I'm going to grant grace and presume the pandemic prevented them from unpacking all the boxes of goodies, I would have thought they had. I'm going to believe that Dr. Stewart and company will expand (yeah I'm holding her accountable because I know her creds). Take the time to go but also go knowing that this can easily be completed in one day by even the slowest & most thorough of readers.

There were some good exhibits, but it is a much smaller museum than you might think. The map system wasn’t very good. My favorite section was this small room with models from the movies, such as the creature from shape of water and C3P0/R2D2. Two sections were closed when I went, but even if those were open it still would have been a small museum. The parking is very overpriced. While there were some neat things to see, a bit disappointed overall.

It was really cool seeing everything here. The best exhibit by far was the Studio Ghibli one. However, I was not allowed to take pictures of it, so there are none here. But if you are visiting this museum not far off from now, I suggest checking that exhibit out. The other exhibits were great.

Love the place! Sensory overload! So much to see, learn, absorb, and experience that you definitely need to spend the day wonder I need in and out of ever room on every floor! Do not miss the sound room! Or the Oscar experience (although you still have to wear a mask which ruins it). The views from the Dolby are breath taking!
Go! Go! Go! You will love it!

I loved my visit here. I came out for the Miyazaki exhibit.

Quick tips/need to knows: tickets: make sure you buy them online and arrive in the window that you are assigned. I came a little early and there was no problem getting in.

Parking: you can mark in the garage right next to the museum. The rate is 18 dollars, but when I went there was plenty of spaces. If you want to search for parking you can find some in adjacent streets (limit is 2 hours though).

So buy your tickets online and park next to the museum and you should be good to go!

I wish I could have brought my kids with me. The exhibit was fantastic and the museum was equally as enjoyable. Not too crowded, and the staff was friendly.

Highly recommend!

First time at this museum. Loved our visit. The staff was amazing. They do have a cafe, but the food is very upscale and has lots of unique choices. I would have found it yummy, but my picky eater in our group could find nothing they would eat. The museum itself was amazing.

The museum is all right. There's only a few exhibits that are sparse. It's a once-a-year kind of museum. I wouldn't go again often.
Definitely not worth spending on a membership for the museum since the exhibits seem to not change often.

Very cool museum. Loved the costumes/props/etc and the Hayao Miyazaki exhibit. The view from the Dolby Family Terrace was incredible. The Oscars Experience was closed due to the pandemic, which was a bummer. Overall I enjoyed the museum but I wish it was a bit bigger and/or had more costumes/memorabilia throughout.

The exhibits will change, but the ones I saw were really thought provoking and helped to give one a better appreciation for everything that goes into film making. Truly a fun experience for anyone who appreciates film at any level.

We didn't have a reservation, so we couldn't go to the museum, but decided to have a bite instead. The prices are pretty standard for LA. One coffee, one French rosé, one apple tart, and one appetizer of hummus came to around 40 something dollars. The apple tart was not too sweet and perfect for me. The hummus was very delicious but only came with two pieces of toast and lots of hummus, so we asked for more and were charged for more. ????????‍♀️ One server said they don't give refills for coffee, but the other one was kind enough to give it. The space is very beautiful, and there's lots of room indoor in the dining area or at the bar as well as outdoor seating. There are other menu items looked really delicious so next time I will try the rest ????

It’s very well done inside and extremely well situated for a museum being directly next-door to LACMA. It would be very easy to see this museum and LACMA in the same day and not feel that you have covered too much square footage walking wise. However I have been waiting for this museum to open up for years. I understand it got delayed due to Covid and other factors related to that but now that it’s finally opened I have to admit I felt a little underwhelmed. There is a lot for the traditional movie fan but in terms of different genres and the more expansive side of film it’s pretty narrow to the big budget more traditional Hollywood way of filming. I just wish that it would’ve been more of a unique experience versus just walking around and looking at outfits and trophies. The section with a bunch of different TV show movie clips was cool but being that I’ve already seen most of those clips already it was easy to pass that section pretty quickly. I felt the Pink Floyd exhibit was a more memorable experience and wish the whole museum here was like that.

Overall I would recommend to anyone who lives in LA or is a fan of museums or motion pictures but if you’re just a casual fan of any of those you will be pretty bored. The café downstairs is actually really good so that could be a nice food option for lunch if needed.

Parking is a bit difficult but if you didn’t want to search around for parking, go park underground. It is $18. And a lot closer! The place is very clean! The staffs were all so kind! You do have to bring your vaccination cards! If you forgot, get the QR code and your ID out to match. There were 5 levels and on the top level you’ll get to see a view! It’s so spacious inside so it’s not overly crowded. Do keep in mind if is warm inside each room. Not sure if it’s because it’s winter. There are escalators and elevators. Seatings are on every level so do not worry if you cannot find one.

Went here for the Miyazaki exhibit. A+, want to go again.

All the exhibits are well thought out and laid out well over the different floors of the museum. It was an unexpected delight to see original costumes and set pieces from various Tim Burton, Jim Henson, Star Wars, Terminator, and Alien movies.

The museum is absolutely worth a visit if you make the time. (We spent four hours there!)

Better than expected. Very large building with a lot to see. The Miyazaki exhibit was very engaging but we think there should be a breeze blowing on the grassy hill. That would make it more immersive. The Latin film exhibit was quite entertaining! Once you go you'll see what I mean. ???? And seeing some of the most well known original costumes of all time was incredible and moving. The Dude Abides. Very much worth the drive from San Diego.

I finally had the chance to visit this museum and it was great. I didn't really have a lot of expectations except, seeing unique cinematic things. This museum covers a wide breadth of all things movie related from sound, backdrops, costumes, animation, and everything in between. In terms of exhibits, it's tastefully done and can easily be self-guided. The exhibits doesn't overwhelm you and you are stuck reading everything. It's a visual experience. I started on the top floor and made my way down.

I enjoyed this place. Definitely use the map they give you, otherwise you may miss out on some exhibits because you can't see what's behind the doors and walls unless you really explore. All the exhibit areas are dimly lit.
Be sure to walk over the Barbra Streisand Bridge to the Dolby Family Terrace for a spectacular view.
If you want to do the Oscar Experience, sign up when you first arrive. It's $15 extra and they will send you the video they took of you accepting an award. The video does not include audio.
The restaurant, Fanny's, was just so-so for the price.
I think there is room for improvement on some of their exhibits. More explanations/captions for some of the displays. Maybe have videos of the people accepting their Oscars above the Oscars they have on display.
But I'm glad I went.

Great place to stay - loved the lookout platform - great views of West Hollywood and the famous sign - which is convenient - there were chairs and you could almost sit and meditate on this magnificent view. I really liked Spielberg's Cinematography Gallery - it would seem just cuts from films - but these are only those shots that went down in the history of cinema - and you are involuntarily impressed when there are so many of them. I will come here again.

Surprising there was no museum dedicated to film until now in the heart of the film industry. And they knocked it out of the park with this museum!!! They cover all aspects of movie making in good detail, and the historic pieces are AMAZING!

As a charter member of the museum, I was glad to be able to visit before the public opening. As with all local museums, it will be crazy crowded for a while. Give it time and come and spend a day! There is so much to see. I will have to come back and dedicate a day or two to explore all there is.

Great job Academy!!!
