This is a great museum, they are having more old fashioned clothing on display in May*They have a small garden and the coolest exhibition is probably the fake bulls which looked so real, I loved those. Travel back to the wild west and visit Gene Autry*Sometimes the museum has free days too*

We visited this museum while on our way to Griffith Observatory. While it the museum is good, it has a lot of contexts all together.
On a side note, if you bring your Bank of America cards, you have free entry

My experience of this museum was overall meh. The different sections sometimes felt like you're walking through an Encyclopedia page by page, which can be nice but can also get boring very fast. The back garden felt redundant and not at all welcoming. The only exhibits I enjoyed were the ones with the paintings: They were beautifully curated. Disclaimer: I'm not a history buff so...

Just drove down here from Lake Arrowhead for the “Masters of the American West” show. Guess what? They are closed! This is an insanely incompetently run museum. You never know if they are open, if the gift store is open or if the cafe is open. They also don’t answer the phone, but will let you leave a message on the membership line. You know, the one where they take your money. Please move the masters show so I don’t have to come here anymore.

I happened to just stumble upon this museum, and honestly I am so glad I did! I had no idea what to expect and it was such a gem, a mix of art and history in one place giving my brain and my heart so much to think on as I went through the galleries that were open. If you enjoy history and having a good think on what western expansion really meant and the lasting effects it's had on different cultures and the land, then by all means this is a great place to spend a few hours.

Nice way to spend an afternoon. Had some really neat exhibits and the experience really makes you reflect on how different life was, just a 100 years ago. Only complaint is that some of the exhibits have really dim lighting.

About two or three exhibits were closed due to renovations, but other than that, i enjoyed learning about California's western history. It's not that big of a museum but still informative. It's only $7 & children from 0-12, I believe, are free. They have a little outdoor space with "rocking horses" kids will enjoy. Their griffin park exhibit is kid friendly. There's an area in that exhibit with a little play house & books for kids to enjoy. So it's a nice little hidden gem within griffin park.

This is an excellent location, right off the I-5. It is a very lovely venue, both inside and outside, pleasing to the eye and mind. Staff and docents were extremely welcoming and helpful. There are a broad variety of exhibits, something for everybody. I was especially interested in the Native American Art and its commentary on contemporary history and culture. Also, the information and displays about indigenous craft and art were valuable. Overall there is a great variety of information about the history and development of the west. I plan to return and learn more.

I didn’t know that I needed to see a museum devoted to the Old American West until I came here. So much priceless history documented for so many communities that inhabited the Old West. Highly recommend!

Way cooler than it seems. Had wild western items like guns and a saloon. Lots of cool artwork and imagery. Start downstairs and work your way up. Fun place to check out. I did it same daynas Zoo across the street.

This seems to be a really interesting art museum that showcases art focused on the fusion of native american and traditional western american art. I visited on a Saturday in the beginning of April 2021, which is soon after it reopened due to the Coronavirus lockdowns. Unfortunately it seemed that more than half the museum exhibits were closed or under renovation, which means I would come back for more. It took me about 45 minutes to casually and calmly view the 3 exhibits. There is not much to do or see here for young kids currently, but I imagine that will change once exhibits reopen. I would wait on visiting here until everything is open again.

It's a beautiful museum, but certainly not one of my favorites in the L.A. area. Mostly clean women's restrooms. People leaned over some of the exhibits too far to take pictures and set off the alarms a few times. Our toddlers did not enjoy this museum so much until we went out to the garden area. There were a few areas closed off due to renovations/upcoming exhibitions when we visited (4/10/18).

free admission on the second Tuesday of each month
free parking in their lot or the L.A. zoo across the street has overflow parking, but I'm not sure how much their fees are
